Wendy’s Subway is a non-profit reading room, writing space, and independent publisher located in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The organization facilitates a range of activities such as free readings, talks, performances, writing workshops, and masterclasses.
In 2020 we designed their website, so they could effectively promote events and display the thousands of books in their library. Our brief required us to use a color scheme of yellow and red because the client wanted a site that was a continuation of their existing graphic identity. The name ‘Wendy’s Subway’ was a portmanteau of two fast-food chains, so perhaps these bright hues were originally meant to symbolize convenience or friendliness? We used a rounded typeface for headers and body copy and assigned different sections of the site soothing background textures. These design moves were meant to soften the appearance of the content, to make users feel at ease in an online community hub.
